Borgi Bastormagi’s Shaping 90° furniture and lighting collection take cues from Levantine corner buildings

“It
was a natural thing that developed based on our time spent together drawing and conceptualising,” says Nada Borgi of her
product design partnership with Etienne Bastormagi. “We used
to study together and spent hours in cafes drawing in our sketchbooks.”

After training as architects and urban planners, both went on to work in large practices in Beirut before establishing their own architecture studios. In 2016 they came together to stage an installation during Milan Design Week and have collaborated on a number of furniture designs since, drawing inspiration from their daily lives and the urban fabric of Beirut. “Walking through the streets is endlessly fascinating,” adds Bastormagi, “We love where we’re from and what we do.”

What was the inspiration behind the new Shaping 90° collection?

Corner buildings. We would walk endlessly in our streets and try to understand how each one had a specific story to tell and a way of being. They often overlook the entire neighbourhood and are sort of like watchers of the streets.

Describe your creative process...do you have defined roles?

E: It’s a back-and-forth game that we play and we develop all our projects as such, even those that end up in the bin.
إتيان: إنها لعبة أخذ ورد، ونطوّر أعمالنا كلها بهذه الطريقة، حتى تلك التي تنتهي في سلّة المهملات.
N: We are very much inspired by architecture and construction methods, and apply similar techniques to product design.

The most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a designer in Lebanon today?
ما هي النواحي المجزية وتلك الأكثر صعوبة في عمل المصمم اليوم في لبنان؟
E: I believe that Lebanon is in its golden design era. We are a very broad-minded society that is linked to this very rich Eastern culture and, at the same time, open to Europe and the world.
إتيان: أعتقد أن لبنان يمر بالعصر الذهبي للتصميم. نحن مجتمع منفتح جدًا مرتبط بهذه الثقافة الشرقية الغنية وبالوقت ذاته، منفتحون على أوروبا والعالم.
N: Many crafts are found in the country, which makes it very enriching for any designer to be based here. Some are authentic to the specific regions and some are the influence of previous mandates or occupations through history.
ندى: تجد في هذا البلد الكثير من الحرف، الأمر الذي يغني أي مصمم يعيش هنا. بعضهم ينتمي بأصالته لمناطق معينة والبعض الآخر متأثر بالإنتداب والاحتلالات عبر التاريخ.

What talent would you most like to possess?

E: A good singing voice.

N: Playing a musical instrument. The piano mainly.

What’s the best piece of advice anyone has given you?

E: Do your thing, and never care about what people think.

What would you do for a living, if you weren't designers?

E: A scientist – I often feel like science, design, architecture are all different branches of a similar discipline. They all need a lot of research even if the outcomes are different.
إتيان: عالم- غالبًا ما أشعر أن العلوم والتصميم والهندسة هي فروع متعددة من نظام واحد. كلها تتطلّب الكثير من البحث حتى لو كانت النتائج مختلفة.
N: Film making. Architecture and cinema have been connected historically and cinematography is a tool that can be applied to any form of design.
