توفي والد ريجز منذ خمس سنوات بشكل غير متوقع، فقررت أنها بحاجة الى العثور على شيء آخر لشغل يديها وعقلها.
ريجز تتذكر: "قال زوجي: ‘مهلاً، أنا اعلم أنك أفضل من هذا، فسوف تعودي ان لم تجدي شيء تحبين القيام به.‘" وقال: "انت عظيمة في اعادة صقل الأثاث".
لذلك قررت تحويل هوايتها القديمة الى وظيفتها المتفرغة. أنشأت ريجز White Whale Furnishings ومنذ ذلك الحين اتخذت عمليات ترميم مخصصة بتكليف من العملاء، وكذلك الأثاث الذي ترممه وتبيعه بنفسها.
درست ريجز مع شخص متخصص بصقل الأثاث بينما طورت عيناً لجودة الخشب.
"لن أعمل بالضرورة مع شخص لديه مجلس صحافي أو أي شيء من هذا القبيل. قالت ريجز: "أنا أبحث عن خشب حقيقي، أشياء تعتبر بالفعل قطع تراثية".
ريجز لا تأخذ أكثر من قطعتينن أسبوياً لكي تعطي كل ترميم الاهتمام الكامل.
قالت ريجز أن ما تراه في الغالب عندما تعمل في بيئة كهذه، ترى الحرفيين يحاولون ضخ الكثير من القطع بسرعة كبيرة. "وهذا ليس ما أفعله".
قالت: "بالنسبة لي، فإن الفرحة تأتي حقاً عندما يقول لي أحدهم: "واو، لقد أحببت تلك القطعة التي قمت بتصميمها" أو "كنت سأرميها بعيداً وقد صنعت شيئاً منها".
“My husband said, ‘Hey, I know you better than this, you’re going to go back if you don’t find something that you love to do,’” Riggs recalls. “And he said, ‘You’re great at refinishing furniture.’”
So she decided to turn her long-standing hobby into her full-time job. Riggs established White Whale Furnishings and has since taken on custom restorations commissioned by clients as well as furniture she restores and sells herself.
Riggs studied with a furniture rehabber specializing while she developed an eye for quality wood.
“I wouldn’t necessarily work with somebody that has press board or anything like that. I’m looking for real wood, things that are really considered heritage pieces,” Riggs said.
Riggs takes on no more than two pieces a week in order to give every restoration her full attention.
“Mostly what you see when you’re working in an environment like that, you see artisans trying to very quickly pump out a lot of pieces,” Riggs said. “And that’s not what I’m doing.”
“For me, the joy really does come in when
somebody says to me, ‘Wow, I really liked that piece that you did,’ or ‘I
really was going to throw that away and you made something of it,’” she said.
