A TRADITIONAL RETREAT IN THE MOUNTAINS OF LEBANON IS TRANSFORMED INTO A CHIC GUESTHOUSE ملاذ تقليدي في جبال لبنان يتحوّل إلى بيت ضيافة أنيق

Beit Trad began as her family’s home. In the early 1980s, when Sarah was a child, the Trads were living in Saudi Arabia. Her mother, Danielle, missed her native Lebanon and dreamed of owning a traditional stone home there in the mountains. An aunt was sent on a mission to find the family a very special house; she came across a stunning two-acre property with a stone main residence, a private chapel, several small cottages, and a view of the Mediterranean. The oldest part of the stone house—which has vaulted ceilings, arches, and arcades—was a nunnery dating back to the end of the 18th century.

في االبداية كان بيت طراد منزلها العائلي. في أوائل الثمانينات، عندما رُزقت ساره بطفلتها، كان آل طراد يعيشون في المملكة العربية السعودية. ولطالما كانت أمها، دانيال، تحن إلى موطنها لبنان وتحلم باقتناء منزل تقليدي ميني من الحجر في الجبل. أرسلت العائلة إحدى العمّات لتجد لهم منزلاً مميّزًا، وصادفت هذه العمّة خلال جولتها عقار بمساحة 8000 متر مربع ويضم منزلاً من الحجر، وكنيسة خاصة، وعدّة فيلات ريفية مع منظر يطل على البحر المتوسط. وكان القسم الأقدم من المنزل الحجري- الذي تميّز بسقف "العقد" اللبناني إضافة إلى أقواس وأروقة- ديرًا للراهبات يعود إلى القرن الثامن عشر.

Trad’s father bought the house in 1984 but sadly died a year later. Still, for the next three decades Trad and her mother enjoyed wonderful summers at the house. When her mother died in 2013, Trad inherited a house and property that were “falling to bits.”

اشترى والد طراد المنزل سنة 1984 ولكن للأسف توفي بعد سنة. على الرغم من ذلك، استمتعت طراد وأمها خلال العقود الثلاثة اللاحقة بأصياف رائعة في حضن هذا المنزل. عندما توفيت والدتها سنة 2013 ، ورثت طراد المنزل والعقار "الذي كان يتهاوى".

For a time, Trad stopped visiting. “The house will wait for me,” she assured her friends. But when one of them warned that “houses die, they lose their vibe,” she realized she couldn’t wait any longer. She decided to convert the house into a guest home that would double as her personal retreat. “It’s a house that likes guests,” she notes. “That’s how it is most happy.”

لفترة طويلة، توقفت طراد عن زيارة المكان وكانت تطمئن أصدقاءها قائلة " البيت سينتظرني ". ولكن عندما حذّرها أحدهم بأن "البيوت تموت وتخسر سحرها"، أدركت أن ليس بإمكانها الإنتظار أكثر. وقررت أن تحوّل المنزل إلى بيت ضيافة الذي ستستخدمه كملاذ شخصي لها أيضًا. وتضيف ساره "إنه منزل يحب الضيوف. هكذا يكون بأفضل حالاته".

She hired a Lebanese team—architect Fadlo Dagher and interior designer Maria Ousseimi—to undertake a respectful restoration. The elegant results maintain the integrity and history of the original architecture while adding such modern conveniences as oversize bathrooms and air-conditioning.

وظّفت طراد فريقًا لبنانيًا- المهندس فضلو داغر والمهندسة الداخلية ماريا عسيمي- لتسلّم مهام ترميم يحترم تاريخ المكان. لذلك حافظت النتيجة النهائية على روح وتاريخ الهندسة الأصلية على الرغم من إضافات عصرية لوسائل الراحة كالحمامات الكبيرة والتبريد.

The public rooms are comfortable and slouchy, filled with books and flowers from the garden and furnished with vintage pieces, colorful textiles, and accessories sourced both locally and abroad. Ousseimi tapped several Lebanese artisans to design new pieces especially for Beit Trad. Nothing in the decor is to be taken too seriously, least of all the divinely quirky papier-mâché hippopotamus head that rules over the living room.

الغرف المشتركة مريحة وواسعة، تملؤها الكتب والأزهار المقطوفة من الحديقة وهي مفروشة بأثاث فينتيدج، أقمشة ملوّنة وأكسسوارات أتوا بها من مناطق محلية وأخرى من الخارج. وتعاملت العسيمي مع عدّة حرفيين لبنانيين لتصميم قطع خاصة ببيت طراد. لا شيء في الديكور يدل على جدية مفرطة، خصوصًا رأس فرس النهر الرائع والغريب، المصنوع من الورق والذي يطغى على غرفة المعيشة.

The property’s mature gardens, laden with jasmine and honeysuckle, were tenderly enhanced with native plants and flowers by the Beirut-based landscape designer Gaby Khalife. A variety of trees, from fig to pomegranate to mulberry, thrive on the property, and a cutting garden is filled with roses in a mélange of colors. The latest addition to the landscape is the sleek and modern pool that was added two years ago.

حديقة المنزل الناضجة والغنية بالياسمين وزهر العسل، قد تم تحسينها بشكل طفيف مع زيادة بعض النباتات المحلية والأزهار على يد مصمم الحدائق غابي خليفة من بيروت. تنمو في المكان مجموعة من الأشجار، من التين إلى الرمّان والتوت إضافة إلى حديقة لقطف الأزهار حيث تمتزج ألوان الورود. أمّا آخر الإضافات إلى الحديقة فهو حوض السباحة الأنيق الذي تمّت إضافته منذ سنتين.

Because Trad’s mother hated being served at a table, meals are offered buffet-style. Guests fill their plates with delicious, seasonal cuisine prepared by the house chef and gather at a long dining table set with vintage linens, dinnerware, and glasses. Every meal begins with cocktails served on the vine-covered porch, in full view of the Mediterranean and its extraordinary sunsets. For dessert, there are French pastries and mouhallabieh, a milk-based Lebanese flan made with orange-blossom water.

كانت تكره والدة طراد أن تقدّم لها الأطباق على الطاولة، لذلك يقدّم الأكل للضيوف على شكل بوفيه. يمكن للضيوف أن يملؤوا صحونهم بأطباق موسمية شهية يحضرها لهم الشيف الخاص للمنزل ثم يجتمعون على طاولة مستطيلة معدّة بشراشف وأواني وأكواب "فينتيدج". تبدأ كل وجبة بكوكتيل يقدّم على الشرفة المكسوة بالنباتات مع منظر مطلّ على البحر  المتوسط وغروب الشمس الساحر. أمّا للتحلية فهناك الحلويات الفرنسية والمهلّبية، وهي حلوى تشبه الفلان مصنوعة على الطريقة اللبنانية مع ماء الزهر.

For Trad, Lebanon’s latest turmoil, which began late last year with nationwide protests against corruption, is about economic change and creating a bright future for the country’s children. A single parent with a two-year-old daughter, Lilah, she retains her sense of optimism. Certainly, five years after she restored it, Trad’s mountain home is beyond “happy”­—it’s overjoyed. The moment you walk through the rose-covered entrance, you are immediately welcomed and become part of the history of this very special place, sharing in the Lebanese tradition of family and hospitality.

وتعتقد طراد أن آخر  أزمات لبنان التي انطلقت العام الماضي على كل الأراضي اللبنانية مع الاحتجاجات ضد الفساد، هدفها التغيير الاقتصادي وتأمين مستقبل مشرق لأبناء الوطن. وتتمسّك هذه الأم الوحيدة لطفلة تبلغ عامين، إسمها ليلا، بروح التفاؤل. طبعًا، بعد خمس سنوات على ترميمه، بيت طراد الجبلي بات أكثر من "سعيد" بل أصبح بمنتهى السعادة. من اللحظة التي تطأ قدمك المدخل المكسو بالورود، يتم استقبالك بحرارة لتدخل تاريخ هذا المكان المميّز وتتشارك العادات اللبنانية المبنية على حب العائلة والضيافة.

In the living room of the main house, the custom sofas in a Rubelli fabric are topped with pillows covered in vintage African textiles, and the Syrian inlaid mother-of-pearl armchair, Turkish chandelier, and table and chairs by Eero Saarinen for Knoll are all vintage. A papier-mâché hippo from a Paris flea market hangs over a vintage photograph of a masked ball. The vintage prints depicting classical armor (left) are from Ann-Morris.

Vintage beds are topped with coverlets in a Lewis & Wood fabric; the vintage wicker chair and side table were repainted yellow, the alcove has a banquette with cushions covered in a Le Manach fabric, and the vintage bird prints were purchased at a Paris flea market.

The floor-to-ceiling cabinets are paneled in vintage doors; a French metal garden table is framed by vintage Chinese bamboo chairs and a pair of bamboo stools from Morocco. The vintage pendant originally hung in a mosque.

الخزائن الممتدة من الأرض إلى السقف مغطاة بأبواب عتيقة ؛ طاولة حديقة معدنية فرنسية محاطة بكراسي الخيزران الصينية القديمة وزوج من كراسي الخيزران من المغرب.  أمّا الثريا المتدلية القديمة فكانت معلقة في الأصل في مسجد.
