As a city immersed in art, culture and history, it’s no wonder that some of the most stylish and provocative homes are found in Beirut. From seaside apartments, to historic mansions, we take a look at five of the most stunning and stylish living rooms in the Lebanese capital.

1.    When it comes to decoration, nothing has the immediate impact of a well-chosen painting or sculpture – and for anyone in need of ideas, this apartment in Beirut offers a masterclass in living with art, and curating an interior. The home of art collectors Nazem and Rima Ahmad and their children for the past eight years, it offers a continually changing display of their most prized pieces, and a constant source of inspiration. Here, a large painting by Will Martyr dominates the living room, which also has a sculpture by Justine Mahoney.

2.    One of Claudia Skaff's main requests for her apartment was a large, open living area. “What’s great is the continuity and fluidity of the space,” notes Georges Maria, who works as part of the brother-and-sister team with Michèle Chaya of the local-based firm, Maria Group. “Yet, it’s not so easy to adopt a loft approach for a family. You have to give each zone its own character and personality.” He and Chaya did that here through a number of strong architectural gestures. They left all the raw concrete walls exposed and put down floor tiles based on traditional patterns from BlattChaya, a company founded by Chaya’s father-in-law at the age of 70. “They bring an authentic Lebanese touch to the flat,” enthuses Skaff.

3.   Owned by Nayla Assouad, a Lebanese businesswoman who lived between Paris and Beirut, Villa Assouad is a beautifully restored home by architect Rabih Geha in collaboration with interior designer Serge Brunst in the city’s historic Achriefeh district. The interiors, says Serge Brunst were “inspired by a Venetian palace.” Special attention was paid to use soft greys and blues— colours that were in fashion in the 19th century. The home is appointed with myriad Oriental details including the exquisite mother-of-pearl inlay furniture, spectacular handmade carpets and a striking domed Turkish fireplace.

4. This twenties Beirut mansion, which provides a haven of peace in the middle of the capital for the businessman Samir Boubess, his wife Rana and their four children, has been transformed into a contemporary home that's brimming with vibrant art thanks to interior architect Claude Missir’s inspiration. A skillful mix of contemporary furniture and notable retro Scandinavian and Italian finds is visible throughout the house. In the living room, a large DS-600 sofa by De Sede creates a welcoming atmosphere. The coffee table is by Paolo Piva and the carpet is from The Rug Company

Rug Company.

5. The owners of this Beirut triplex — a couple with three children who live between Lebanon and Angola —initially left Claude Missir more or less to his own devices. Many of the furnishings have a strong visual impact. On one side of the generously proportioned living room, there is an elegantly curved custom sofa upholstered in a Dedar silk velvet. The Mursi coffee tables by Piergil Fourquié are made from blown glass and screen-printed leather. The blue convex Yoko mirror is by Hervé Van der Straeten.“I liked the fact that it mixes gold and silver,” says Missir. “It allowed me to use them in the rest of the room.”
